MENTORING

You’ve known what to do for a while now.

Six months, maybe. The work keeps coming in, nothing’s on fire and nothing changes.
Three months. You bring what you know about your market. I bring what I’ve learned about making a living from it.

Mentoring is a two-way conversation.

You know your industry, your clients and your craft far better than I ever will, that’s the raw material we work with. What I bring is the view from the other side: what it took to go from struggling to thriving business owner and what I’ve seen work since across the businesses I’ve supported.

Put the two together and you get a plan built around your business, not a template borrowed from someone else’s. Don’t let another month pass by feeling overwhelmed and underpaid. Your business has the potential to provide both financial security and personal fulfilment, sometimes you just need someone in the room asking the right questions.

GET IN TOUCH

WHAT THIS IS ACTUALLY FOR

Most mentoring pages list topics such as pricing, positioning, productivity and contracts. You can find all of that written up better and faster elsewhere and you probably already have. Here’s what we actually work on:

  • The conversation where you tell a client of six years that your rate has gone up. Not the theory of value-based pricing. The actual sentence and what you do when they go quiet.
  • The client who’s slowly stopped respecting your time and how you get that back without blowing up the relationship.
  • The proposal you’ve been rewriting for four days, because sending it means finding out.
  • The work you’re proudest of that isn’t actually your best work and someone honest enough to tell you which is which.
  • Deciding you’re allowed to stop doing the thing you’re known for and are quietly sick of.
  • The month where nothing comes in and you start looking at job adverts at midnight.
  • Being the only person who has any idea what your working life is like.

None of these are marketing problems. All of them are the reason talented people stop working for themselves and go back into the workplace.

WHY me?

I’ve been the person at midnight looking at job adverts. Twenty-nine years in marketing. Fifteen of them running my own business which means I’ve had the bad quarter, the client who didn’t pay, the piece of work I undercharged so badly I resented it for months and at least one point where going back to a salary looked extremely sensible.

I’m not sympathetic, because I’ve read about it, I’m sympathetic, because I know exactly which bit of it is worst and it isn’t the money.

  • I remember where you were. Working for yourself is invisible work. Nobody watches you do it and nobody notices when you get better at it. Part of my job is being the person who can tell you, honestly, how far you’ve come.
  • I won’t flatter you. This matters more than it used to. If the only feedback you get comes from something designed to be agreeable, you’ll get steadily more confident and no better. I’ll tell you when the work isn’t strong enough and you’ll know I mean it because I’ll also tell you when it is.
  • I’ll give you permission. Half of this job is someone with thirty years behind them saying yes, sack that client, it’s the right call. Permission from something that would have agreed with you either way is worth nothing.
  • I notice what you don’t say. That you’ve mentioned the same client three times in a particular tone. That you keep rescheduling the session about money. That’s read off a person in a room, not off a prompt.
  • And you’ll turn up. Not because of an app, because you told me you’d have it done by the 14th and you don’t want to be the one who didn’t.

“Couldn’t I just use AI?”

For a lot of this, yes and you should. I use it every day and I’ll show you how to use it far better than you currently are. It’s genuinely brilliant at the work. It will also tell you to double your rates, it won’t be on the phone at nine o’clock on Tuesday when you have to say the number out loud and it won’t ring you afterwards to ask how it went. It doesn’t know you did this eighteen months ago and lost your nerve at the last minute and it has never once been frightened of losing a client, because it has never had one.

I’m not competing with it. I’m the part it can’t do.

THE RESULTS

Clients typically increase their income by around 40% within three months while working fewer hours.

Those results come out of a genuine partnership. I won’t pretend to know your industry better than you do, so expect a lot of questions and expect me to take your answers seriously. You bring the expertise, the client relationships and the instinct you’ve built up in your field. I bring the business strategy, the pricing, the marketing and the pattern recognition that comes from having done this before and watched others do it too. The best ideas usually turn up somewhere in the middle.

If you’re skilled at what you do but you aren’t connecting with your audience, then that’s exactly the gap I close. Building safety, certainty and stability with your audience.

who it’s for

This works if you:

  • Are already freelancing, with clients, and it’s not going the way you pictured
  • Are good at what you do and it isn’t translating into money
  • Suspect the thing holding you back is something you’d rather not say out loud
  • Can get to the North West twice in three months
  • Want to be told the truth more than you want to be encouraged

This isn’t right if you:

  • Haven’t started yet – begin with the The Profitability System™
  • Want the marketing done for you – that’s Done-For-You Marketing
  • Want a course you can work through at your own pace, alone
  • Are looking for someone to confirm you’re already doing everything right
how it works

A full day together – in person.

We start with a full day together. You teach me your business, your market and how your clients actually buy. I bring an outside perspective and the questions nobody has thought to ask you yet. Between us we pinpoint what’s really holding you back and map the fastest route forward.

Your plan. Written for you, not for business owners in general.

30-60-90 day milestones, built from what I saw on the day. It’ll tackle the most pressing thing first and it’ll be honest about the order.

Six calls. Ninety minutes each. Fortnightly.

Bi-weekly 90-minute video calls for guidance, accountability and real-time problem solving (6 in total over the 3-month programme). These aren’t one-way briefing, you’ll bring back what you’re learning from your market as you test things, and we’ll adjust the plan around it.

A three-hour review. In person again.

Three months on, face to face. What changed, what didn’t, what you can now do that you couldn’t before the mentoring. Then we decide whether you need me any more. Plenty of people don’t. That’s the outcome I’m aiming for.

what i’ll ask you

Come with your knowledge of your industry, your honest numbers and a willingness to be challenged. I’ll come with everything I’ve learned about building a business that pays you properly. Neither half works on its own.
